“THE ONE” Condominium at One Bloor West - Salit Steel

Salit Steel teamed up with Anchor Shoring (Now GFL) to tackle some of the largest caisson cages ever supplied in the GTA.

This project had many obstacles, from no room on site to build cages, to 10 foot diameter cages with 55M – Grade 500 rebar with each cage weighing up to 15 metric tonnes. The sheer size, weight and length of these cages required out of the box thinking by Salit Steel Rebar Sales in Grimsby, Stelcrete in Welland, SRI installations, detailing and Salit trucking to come up with a cage support system, method of building, and special freight requirements in order to ship these cages that were up to 24 meters long.

There are a total of 98 caisson cages on the project – 68# smaller 4’-4”diameter cages that were 100% welded on Salit automated GTM caisson machine by Stelcrete in Welland and maxing out Salit trucks with 3# cages per delivery. The remaining 30# cages at 10’ diameter over 60’ feet long shipped in one piece using special freight. Currently all 68# GTM cages have been delivered to site and 4 of the large 10 foot diameter cages have been successfully lifted to their final resting place over a 120 feet below street level at Yonge and Bloor. These large caissons will support the tallest condo in Toronto at 1,043 feet tall with the building structure design using a rare Structural Steel Exoskeleton design combined with reinforced concrete which eliminates interior columns within the building.

Aside from the sheer size of these units, this project is very significant as it exemplifies what can be accomplished when we blend the skill set and knowledge of the divisions and departments at the Salit Group of Companies. Early in 2018, this concept was merely a sketch on a whiteboard at the Salit Rebar sales office in Grimsby; Fast forward a year and we have several cages a week rolling down the highway on the way to Toronto.

As construction and infrastructure projects become larger and designers become more and more creative, the Salit Group of Companies has a tremendous opportunity to capitalize on the diverse talent across all our divisions and locations; Together, we offer our customers and partners a unique mix of resources like no other steel company in Canada.

Recently at Salit Steel HQ we asked for our Team to send in some shots from their 2018 summer fun! The results were fantastic and we’re happy to say that the Salit family had many happy moments of summer fun to share with us! Thank you to everyone who shared their photos and stories, the results were REALLY great and here is one of our favourites sent in from Gary at our Bowmanville location.

My Kidney Story by Gary Vander Meulen, Salit Steel Bowmanville

This summer was vastly different from any other summer I’ve ever had. But it was also by far the most rewarding. On July 4 I had the privilege of donating a kidney to a young man who needed one. He is the son of friends who I’ve known since grade school.

It is so hard to keep this journey a short story. What I can say is that there was a need and I was willing to step up and try to help. After lots of testing, we were an excellent match. Surgery went well (it turns out that I have/had! extra large kidneys) and recovery also went very well. The young man is also back to work in September and the dialysis machine was removed from his house in mid-August.

Along the way I learned a few things. God can take “I’m willing to try” and turn it into something big and beautiful. Prayers, thoughts and well wishes can really be felt when they are lifted up on your behalf.

And I am now convinced that it is the right thing to do to give away what you do not need to someone who needs it. Be it time, money, a helping hand or, on very rare occasion, a body part!

Thanks to Salit Steel who supported me through the process and was a part of making this happen. My family and the recipient’s family have been blown away by those who contributed, helped and supported us this summer.

Earlier in the spring the team at Stelcrete opened their doors to welcome some students from Niagara College. These students are graduating students of the Construction Engineering Technology program, just like our own Mark Young, StelCrete Engineering Co-ordinator. The students made the trip to StelCrete in Welland, Ontario to get a look at the production side of the rebar/steel industry and to learn about the many aspects of this business so the students are aware of what opportunities could be available to them upon graduation.

The students learned about the different machinery and its technological advances used by StelCrete to produce the many products we make for our customers. This included information on StelCrete’s assembly program, Salit Steel’s shearing and bending for the loose supply of rebar, and Service Center’s
structural steel supply. Students were also taught about the process from order to delivery and some of the industry challenges we face with tight deadlines and the logistics of some of the bigger projects. Educational tours like this one are one of the many ways that Salit Steel exists among our community, and it is a great opportunity for students to see first-hand the skills they have learned being put to practice, and a great opportunity for Salit to tap into the emerging workforce. We are proud to host students from Niagara College, and even prouder to say that members of our team are Niagara College Alumni.

Keeyask Project Update from the Front Lines - Salit Steel

The Keeyask Project is a hydroelectric generating station that is being developed in a partnership between Manitoba Hydro and Manitoba First Nations. Salit Steel was awarded the contract to be the primary supplier and installation of rebar for the Keeyask Generating Station in Northern Manitoba. Once completed, The Keeyask Generating Station will be a source of renewable energy providing approximately 695 megawatts of capacity and producing an average of 4,400 gigawatt hours of electricity each year.

The Keeyask Project is a hydroelectric generating station that is being developed in a partnership between Manitoba Hydro and Manitoba First Nations. Once completed, The Keeyask Generating Station will be a source of renewable energy providing approximately 695 megawatts of capacity and producing an average of 4,400 gigawatt hours of electricity each year.

As you can see from the pictures, this is one of Salit Steel’s largest projects to date, and with a project of this scale there are many challenges that the Salit Team has had to overcome. For anyone who has made the trip to the Keeyask Site they will know that the remoteness of the site alone provides many obstacles. Not just for transportation of team members ( Imagine having to take a charter flight, and 2 hours bus ride just to get there!) but maintain balance and a positive workforce in weather condition’s that can reach as low as -60 in the winter to +40 in the summer, that is one extreme to another!
This year, the team at Keeyask has recorded a maximum low of approximately -57 with the wind chill and an avg. Temp of -30 to -40 throughout the winter months. Blake Drover, Slait Field Coordinator at Keeyask, says that the key to success is staying warm through the use of proper PPE and winter attire. He knows firsthand how the extreme cold affects the team, as well as equipment and makes for a challenging work environment.

All of our Salit Team that are contributing to the building of the project lodge in 1 of 2 camps provided which in total can accommodate up to 2,000 people. Presently the workforce consists of three different work schedules but most have 20 to 21 days on working with either 8 to 10 days off which varies with the different departments one works with.

Our hats go off to the Salit Team who are working on the Keeyask Project, we know that it is one tough job!. Currently they have installed approx. 48% of their original target; keep up the great work, and stay warm!

New Year New Look for SSR - Salit Steel

In 2017, Salit Specialty Rebar, known as SSR, consolidated from two plants into one. We closed our Niagara Falls facility and moved all staff and operations to our Buffalo facility in order to increase productivity by reducing material handling time and promoting easier communication.

Before the big move SSR renovated the Buffalo office, and transformed approx. 6,000 square feet of previously unusable space into SSR’s headquarters. If you take a look at the pictures you’ll see that they even used some stainless rebar in the interior design! This is the first time that all staff have worked from the same office.

In the past year SSR has invested heavily in quality control equipment and training for our staff to continue to lead the way in stainless rebar fabrication. We adopted a new Stainless Steel Reinforcing Bar Fabrication Quality Standard published by the CRSI (Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute). SSR’s stand-alone stainless steel facility in Buffalo, NY is unparalleled in its ability to produce quality product quickly for the North American markets.

Our Sales group has expanded our products to include stainless steel welded wire mesh to complement our comprehensive inventory of stainless steel rebar, couplers, tie wire, etc.

SSR expanded operations to three shift during busy months to increase output to best serve our customers, and in 2018 SSR is working on adding additional processing equipment.

The SSR team is excited about the improvements we’ve made to best serve the stainless reinforcing industry and out continued objective is to be an industry leader in quality and on-time performance.

During the Month of December Salit Steel locations across Canada took on the challenge of “Food Fabrication”. Working in teams, the challenge was to build something out of food items that then would be donated to a local Food Bank. There were a few parameters for this challenge and to keep thing interesting, and bonus points were offered if a team chose to recreate a Salit Steel project.

As you can see from the pictures, it turns out that we have a competitive bunch around here, and many creative team members who took on this challenge whole heartedly!

Although each location did name a winning team, it is safe to say that the real winners were the Salit Community as each team outdid themselves and as a result we donated a record amount of food and much needed items to our local food banks across Canada! A HUGE congratulation goes out to all of our locations across Canada that took on this challenge and supported families less fortunate within their community.

Thanks to everyone ones efforts we were able to make a difference and generously donate to:

Every year, Salit Steel partners with local Colleges and Universities to offer summer employment opportunities to students who are in full time post-secondary education.

As our summer students head back to class this week, we’d like to share some thoughts from one our students, Justin Caporuscio, who is embarking on a new adventure this fall – moving to France to study abroad!

Justin has spent the last three summers working for Salit Steel. Justin’s first year was spent in Production, and in his second year he worked as a Service Centre Assistant helping out quotes and post and pre-production. This year, he spent the summer as an Operations Assistant in our Niagara Falls head office.

“I really liked the projects that I have been a part of, and having my supervisor place his trust in me to give me a high level of responsibility.

I have learned that teamwork and communication is a huge key to success here, and that we all do it really well.

This year I’ve had a lot of opportunities to work with computers and even learn about coding, which pushed me out of my comfort zone.

I also learned that Salit Steel supplied the steel for BMO field, and being a TFC fan I think that is pretty cool!

I am currently studying Business at Brock University with a focus in Marketing. In the Fall I am headed to France to study international marketing and I hope to become a Marketing Manager, or anything to do with strategic marketing when I am done school.

Working on projects at Salit has also encouraged me to consider a position in Project Management.”

To be considered for our summer student program, students must be in a discipline related to our industry, which believe it or not, covers a wide range of studies. We employ students in many roles including junior detailers, human resources, accounting, administrative support, special projects, IT and roles on the front lines in production including welding, mechanical engineering.

Regardless of the role, we take pride in providing training for our students and do everything we can to make them feel a part of the Salit team. Some of students go on to join us in full-time employment after graduation.
